"This thesis will attempt to examine the impact of technical and design factors on the concept of virtual community by examining the role of weblogs in online community-building. The recent publication of three new books - We've Got Blog, We Blog: Publishing Online with Weblogs and The Weblog Handbook - adds to the steadily-growing body of literature which attempts to explain the popularity of weblogs and the social implications of the 'weblog community' (Cashel, 2001).
Given the vast differences between conventional forms of virtual communities, such as MUDs, and weblogs, it is surprising that the idea of weblog communities as been accepted by so many people and with so little resistance. Thus, the existence of weblog communities should be investigated, if only to uncover how and why the weblog can support the activities normally associated with online communities."

"Além do Abrupto, que é actualizado quase diariamente (as pausas acontecem por obrigação das constantes viagens), Pacheco Pereira abriu recentemente o Estudos sobre o Comunismo, blogue homónimo de uma publicação editada entre 1983 e 1985. A ideia de ressuscitar a revista, dedicada ao estudo científico do comunismo, em formato "on line" era já um "projecto antigo". "Arranquei com o blogue como instrumento de trabalho regular, em contacto com outros investigadores", conta, acrescentando, porém, que a versão virtual serve apenas como "instrumento activo de investigação e registo bibliográfico". A intenção é, afirma, "agrupar num sítio mais estável os produtos finais". O Abrupto, esse, vai de vento em popa, ascendendo à galeria dos blogues mais visitados.
